Accompanying the overarching tension and sadness of the plot are beautiful moments, showing friendship, the colourful London skyline and the diverse cultures existing in England.

excellent.

The Perfect Candidate

The Perfect Candidate.jpeg

Synopsis

When prevented from flying to Dubai for a conference without a male guardian's approval, a young Doctor seeks help from a politically connected cousin but inadvertently registers as a candidate for the municipal council.

Audience Star rating:     82%

Audience Feedback

Saudi Arabia shown as a place where 'modernity rubs up against entrenched conservatism'. A female Director but we see nepotism, cynicism, sexism and chaos in the political system. Although there have been significant concessions for women in recent years, this film highlighted that there is still a colossal gender divide - obstacles for women remain a fact of life, making them unheard and invisible.

A bold film; a worthwhile message; glad to have seen it; a simple story, told without frills but filled with great power, conviction and an underlying hope for a better world.

The Truffle Hunters

The Truffle Hunters.jpeg

Synopsis

Deep in the forests of Piedmont, Italy, a handful of men, seventy or eighty years young, hunt for the rare and expensive white Alba truffle, guarding their location with absolute secrecy.

Audience Star rating:     89%

Audience Feedback

So enjoyable. Delightful, lyrical! Beautiful scenery and internal scenes. An uplifting film. Lovely glimpse into a small and possibly threatened life. An intriguing portrayal of a pastoral lifestyle.

Beautiful shots of landscapes that look like paintings by Brueghel and interior shots that are almost like tableaux, mostly of two men or a man and his dog. Left a smile on your face.

Promising Young Woman

Film info:
Date shown:

March 2022

Promising Young Woman.jpeg

Synopsis

This playfully provocative and ingenious rape-revenge satire is about a society that thinks what a shame it would be if the career of a promising young man were ruined over some alleged incident in which both parties were probably drunk.

Audience Star rating:     93%

Audience Feedback

Written and directed by a woman, it is an excellent and relevant film which deftly questions attitudes to women and rape. Whilst dealing with a serious subject well it is witty, clever, surprising, brilliantly acted, entertaining, and leaves you thinking.

After the showing, the audience talked about how important they felt this film was, how pleased they were that TFS had chosen to show it and that more people should see it, and someone thought that it

should be shown in schools and universities.

Minari

Korean - 2021

February 2022

Minari.jpeg

Synopsis

A tender and sweeping story about what roots us, Minari follows a Korean-American family that moves to a tiny Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream.

Audience Star rating:     86%

Audience Feedback

A positive picture of the local small town people. Amidst the instability and challenges of this new life, Minari shows the undeniable resilience of family and what really makes a home.

It was commented that the film had the gentle, hazy energy of a memory. Someone found the film a bit slow at points - but still loved it. It was felt the ending offered hope, that the Yi family will come back stronger as farmers and as a family.

November 2021

Sounds of Metal.jpeg

Synopsis

A heavy-metal drummer's life is turned upside down when he begins to lose his hearing and he must confront a future filled with silence.

Audience Star rating:     86%

Audience Feedback

A challenging and informative look at the world of deafness. A well made and enjoyable film. Excellent portrayal by Riz Ahmed and Paul Raci. Many of the minor roles are played by deaf actors and the actor playing the role of the founder of the deaf rehab facility, whilst not actually deaf himself, has involvement with the deaf community as both parents are deaf.

Comments from members included: excellent choice - one to stay with you; wonderful; one to think about.

Birds of Passage

Film info:
Date shown:

Columbia - 2018

October 2021

Birds of Passage.jpeg

Synopsis

The origins of the Colombian drug trade, as seen through the eyes of an indigenous Wayuu family that becomes involved in the booming business of selling marijuana to American youth in the 1970s.

Told in five chapters it tracks the gradual impact of crime across generations as we see the younger people less and less being governed by the ancient rules.

Audience Star rating:     86%

Audience Feedback

Showed the importance of women in the Wayyu society, a traditional, historical, indigenous community.  It had the quality of a classic tragedy, such as Greek or Shakespearean.

Surreal aspects were noted - the Crane strutting through the room, the owl on the roof, the old woman walking on a railway line into the sea - all dream linked and part of the Wayyu's culture of finding out what is going to happen by reading dreams.

The Mole Agent

The Mole Agent.jpeg

Synopsis

An intriguing fly-on-the-wall documentary from Chile, takes an unusual approach to the subject of the treatment of the elderly after a concerned resident's daughter instigates an investigation.

Audience Star rating:     92%

Audience Feedback

Great film, loved it. Never too late to embark on new adventures. Beautifully made, tender and sensitive. All life is there.

The director had expected to find neglect and cruelty in the nursing home but instead encountered isolation and loneliness, interspersed with flashes of anger, death, celebrations of birthdays, but overall tireless care and support from the staff. An absorbing pleasure to watch. And the old folks were the stars.

Audience Star rating:     Not done

Audience Feedback

Directoral debut for Paul Dano, career-best performance from Carey Mulligan. Sense of foreboding. Parents showed breathtaking lack of care of son through whose eyes the story unravelled.

We screened this film from FilmBank, hence no audience feedback data.

Limbo

Film info:
Date shown:

UK - 2020

March 2021

Limbo.jpeg

Synopsis

Limbo is about refugees and asylum seekers in Britain, 'settled' in the Outer Hebrides, with an honest evocation of Scottish remoteness. At times funny, overall quirky, but tinged throughout with sadness.

Audience Star rating:     85%

Audience Feedback

A wry and poignant observation of the refugee experience.

The film is simultaneously sad and funny. The bleak beauty of the Outer Hebrides provides a striking backdrop. It was noted that in Catholic theology 'limbo' is a nothing place, a joyless chasm between worlds where all hope is gone; thus this was felt an appropriate title for the film.
